Large-Format 3D Printing in Europe: How to Order Big Parts Online
Search for a 3D printing service and you'll find hundreds of shops — until your part is bigger than a shoebox. Machines with a genuine large build volume are rare, and most bureaus quietly quote your one-meter sculpture as ten glued segments. This guide explains what large format actually means, what big parts cost, and why ordering from another EU country is easier than most people expect.
What counts as "large format" in 3D printing?
There's no official standard, but in practice:

One piece or sections: why it matters
A large part can always be chopped into desktop-size chunks and glued. Sometimes that's fine. Often it isn't:
- Strength. Every glue joint is a weak plane. Structural brackets, fixtures and load-bearing decor should be printed whole.
- Finish. Seams telegraph through paint. On a sculpture or retail display viewed up close, joints are visible forever.
- Labor. Ten sections mean ten alignments, clamping, filling and sanding. That labor often costs more than the larger print.
The practical rule: if the part fits inside 800 × 800 × 1000 mm, print it as one piece. Beyond that, a good service sections the model deliberately — with keyed joints placed where geometry hides them — rather than wherever a small printer forced the cut.
What large-format printing costs
Price scales with print time and material weight, not complexity. A meter-tall piece can run on the machine for several days, which is what you're really paying for. Realistic ranges from our own quoting:

Physical products cross EU borders with no customs, no import VAT surprise and no paperwork for the buyer. What to prepare before requesting a quote
You'll get an accurate quote fastest if your inquiry includes:
- The model — STL or STEP preferred; OBJ, 3MF and IGES also work.
- Target size — the bounding box in millimeters, or a scale factor.
- Purpose — display piece, outdoor sign, structural fixture? This drives material choice.
- Color and finish — raw print, sanded, primed or painted.
- Deadline and destination country — so lead time and shipping land in the same quote.
No model yet? Photos plus rough dimensions are enough — modeling from photos is a normal part of the service, and for figures it's the whole product.
